Harlequins Official Player Welfare Partner

Focusing on rugby and me

Harlequins, Charles Stanley

In March 2019, we announced an exciting new partnership with Harlequins, a club that aligns with Charles Stanley’s own ethos to put people at the heart of its organisation.

Issues facing players

Through the course of our partnership, we have learnt more about the players and the pressures of professional sport. We have come to understand the clear link between those pressures and the services and support we can offer in our capacity as a Wealth Manager.

Below are some key statistics from the Rugby Players Association (RPA) survey & Professional Players Federation (PPF) research.

62%

of players report mental health issues post-retirement.

52%

said that two years after retiring they did not feel in control of their lives.

50%

of players have had financial issues in the first five years of retirement.

46%

of players were unhappy with the preparation for life after sport.

78%

wished they had taken more financial advice when they were playing sport in order to help with their transition

Welfare

How can we help?

Mental wellbeing and finances are two of the significant issues that retired players face, but we recognise that this is not unique to rugby players alone. There are parallels with many other sports and industries, including financial services. Whether it be through financial advice and investing, work experience and post-retirement planning or raising awareness for the broader issues that affect mental wellbeing, we are committed to supporting Harlequins’ players, our staff and our clients.
