Our keynote address was delivered by David Blunkett, former Home Secretary and Secretary of State for Work and Pensions. 

Our three panellists for the conference were: Hugh Nolan, Dalriada Trustees, Roger Mattingly, Ross Trustees and Nigel Jones, Broadstone.

Meet the Panellists

We were delighted to announce that joining our panel at the conference was Hugh Nolan, Senior Trustee Representative from Dalriada Trustees, Roger Mattingly, Trustee Director of Ross Trustees and Nigel Jones Head of Consulting & Actuarial from Broadstone.
Our panel of independent experts debated the challenges ahead for defined benefit pension schemes. The last year has seen significant changes that affect pension schemes - from increased regulation of investment service providers to greater scrutiny of Trustees from the Pensions Regulator. How will these and other developments impact us all?

Hugh Nolan - Senior Trustee Representative
Hugh is a senior Trustee Representative with almost 30 years in the pensions industry. He joined Dalriada in April 2016 having held a variety of senior roles in several major pension consultancies, including management, administration and actuarial positions. He is the immediate past President of the Society of Pension Professionals (SPP) and Chair of the DC Committee of the Association of Consulting Actuaries (ACA), and these roles give him a genuine insight into the best ideas to deliver to his own clients. He is a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries and is a highly experienced Scheme Actuary who has advised a wide range of schemes, including FTSE-100 clients, other household names and a variety of smaller schemes. He currently acts as a Trustee on schemes ranging in size from £1m to around £500m and often acts as Chair, either of the Trustee Board or Sub-Committees such as Investment or Administration. His portfolio of schemes includes traditional Defined Benefit schemes, Defined Contribution schemes and hybrid arrangements.
Roger Mattingly - Trustee Director
Roger has been in the pensions industry for his entire career much of which was as a main board director of two of the leading consultancy firms.Roger has been a professional trustee for the last six years and is a trustee to a number of schemes of various shapes and sizes. He previously served on the Board of HSBC Actuaries and Consultants Limited for over twenty years. He is a Past President of the Society of Pension Professionals, a Fellow of the Institute of Directors and has been a member of various industry groups, including the pensions Regulator’s Stakeholder Advisory Panel and more recently as Chair of the Pensions & Lifetime Savings Association’s Multi-employer Defined Benefit Committee.
Nigel Jones - Head of Consulting & Actuarial
Nigel is currently the Head of Consulting & Actuarial at Broadstone and focuses on delivery of the Firm’s strategic goals and growing market share. Nigel is a qualified actuary with over 20 years’ experience in the pensions industry and is a scheme actuary to a number of schemes ranging from under £10 million to over £1 billion in asset size. He also specialises in liability management and pension scheme de-risking. Nigel joined Mitchell Consulting, now Broadstone, in 2009, having previously held senior roles with, KPMG, Mercer and Aon Consulting.
