We wish all our clients and readers a happy Coronation weekend. May you enjoy the holiday with friends and family, spending the time in ways you find most agreeable.

On 6 May, the United Kingdom and fourteen other countries will celebrate the coronation of the new King, Charles III and Camilla, the Queen Consort.

Many will tune in to watch the televised proceedings, and some will join street parties or community events. He becomes King not just of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, but also of Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, The Bahamas, Belize, Canada, Grenada, Jamaica, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, the Solomon Islands and Tuvalu.

Charles has served a long apprenticeship for his role, becoming heir apparent in 1952 at the age of 3. On the death of his mother Elizabeth II last year he became the oldest sovereign to inherit the crown.

As a long-serving Prince of Wales he has developed several charities and helped many others. His Prince’s Trust has done much good work for young people and he has long been a proponent of environmental and other “green” causes.

The Coronation will include taking the Oath and being anointed by the Archbishop of Canterbury. The archbishop has said that coronations “often carry with them the hopes and prayers of nations for peace, justice and the common good”.

We are to expect that out of view of cameras the King will exchange his coronation robes for a simple white shirt for the anointing. This is to show his commitment to the life of service the crown requires.

Many will join in saying God save the King.
