AI glasses: where AI, vision care, and fashion intersect

AI glasses are still at an early stage, but the category has moved from concept to credible consumer product.

For many investors, AI has so far been a story about chips, data centres and software. Smart glasses bring the debate closer to the consumer. They show how AI could move from a phone in the hand to a device worn on the face.

Glasses occupy valuable real estate. They sit directly in front of our eyes and beside our ears, while also being familiar. Billions of people already wear them for vision correction, sun protection or fashion. That gives smart glasses a more-natural starting point than many earlier wearable technologies.

A short history of smart glasses

Smart glasses are not new. Early versions were often aimed at industrial users, where hands-free information could help workers follow instructions, inspect equipment or speak to remote experts. This remains one of the more practical areas for the technology.

Google Glass brought the category into public view more than a decade ago, but it also showed how difficult consumer adoption could be. The product was expensive, looked unusual and raised privacy concerns. Snap later took a different route with Spectacles, using camera-first glasses to capture short first-person videos for social media. The broader augmented-reality market then shifted towards larger headsets, including Meta Quest and Apple Vision Pro. Those products remain relevant, but they are not every-day eyewear.

The lesson from earlier cycles is that clever technology is not enough. Products worn on the face need to be comfortable, affordable and socially acceptable. That is where the current generation starts to look more interesting.

Why the current generation may be different

Earlier smart glasses often felt like technology products forced into an eyewear format. The current wave begins from the other direction, with fashionable eyewear and AI added more discreetly, making the product more wearable.

The most visible example is Ray-Ban Meta, produced through the partnership between Meta and EssilorLuxottica, the eyewear group behind brands such as Ray-Ban and Oakley. The starting point is a familiar pair of glasses from brands people already recognise, with cameras, microphones, open-ear speakers and an AI assistant built into the frame. Newer models are also moving towards display-enabled glasses, where information can appear in the lens.

That intersection of fashion and AI is the reason this cycle may have a better chance than previous attempts. Consumers are not being asked to wear a conspicuous gadget. They are being offered something closer to normal eyewear, with technology layered in, and the option to add in prescription lenses too. 

What the glasses do

At their most basic level, AI glasses combine traditional eyewear with cameras, microphones, speakers and an AI assistant. They can take photos and videos hands-free, make calls, play music, send messages, translate speech, recognise objects and respond to voice commands. The more advanced versions are moving towards display-enabled eyewear, where information can appear in the lens itself. Ray-Ban Meta Display, launched in 2025, introduced a colour in-lens display for notifications, messages, navigation, live translation and visual AI responses, controlled through a neural wristband. This does not make the smartphone obsolete overnight. But it suggests that eyewear could become a companion interface for short, frequent tasks.

The early numbers are notable. EssilorLuxottica sold more than 7 million AI glasses in 2025, compared with around 1.7 million in 2024, and AI glasses represented roughly 6% of group revenue. That is a meaningful change in scale for a category that was recently regarded as a niche experiment.

From everyday convenience to workplace tools

For consumers, the appeal is easy to picture. A cyclist could record a descent hands-free. A runner could receive performance prompts during a session. A traveller could use live translation to understand a conversation, sign or menu without reaching for a phone.

Amazon is developing smart delivery glasses that help drivers scan packages, follow walking directions and capture proof of delivery without constantly switching between a phone, parcel and their surroundings.

Healthcare offers another example. In an operating theatre, a specialist does not need to be physically present to provide support. Smart surgery glasses can allow a remote expert to see through the eyes of a medical professional and offer guidance on a procedure. 

The defence sector works on a similar principle. UK Defence Innovation and the Defence and Security Accelerator have funded augmented-reality remote support for military operations, allowing expertise to be brought into the field through secure systems. A technician repairing equipment at sea, or in a remote location, could connect to a specialist who sees what they see, rather than waiting for that specialist to travel.

Hearing glasses and the quieter disruption

There is also another version of the same theme in hearing glasses. Nuance Audio, owned by EssilorLuxottica, combines eyewear with embedded hearing technology for people with perceived mild-to-moderate hearing loss. The product uses open-ear speakers and microphones built into the frame, so it looks more like normal eyewear than a conventional hearing device.

The addressable problem is large. Hearing loss affects roughly 1.5 billion people, or around 20% of the global population, yet hearing-aid adoption remains low. Cost, stigma, fitting complexity and consumer reluctance have all held back the market. Nuance Audio Hearing Glasses are positioned as a lower-cost, less stigmatised, over-the-counter-style solution.

This technology is still early. Traditional hearing-aid companies have deep expertise, while consumer technology companies are also adding hearing features to earbuds. The opportunity for hearing glasses lies in combining vision, hearing and retail distribution in one familiar product. 

The companies involved

The smart-glasses ecosystem is broader than one company. Eyewear groups bring frame design, lens technology, prescription capability, retail stores and fitting expertise. Technology companies bring AI assistants, software platforms, cloud infrastructure and consumer reach. Chipmakers, camera suppliers, display companies, battery makers and optical-component specialists may also have a role.

Meta and EssilorLuxottica are currently the most visible partnership. Alphabet’s Google, Apple, Samsung, Snap and Amazon are also playing in this space through their work in augmented reality, spatial computing, voice assistants, smart eyewear or related platforms. Smaller and more specialised participants include Vuzix, Xreal, Rokid, Brilliant Labs, Solos and Xiaomi, although many of these products focus on narrower uses such as enterprise tools, display glasses, translation, audio or developer-led augmented reality.

This makes the theme more complicated than looking for one winner. The profit pool could sit in hardware, prescription lenses, coatings, software, AI services, app ecosystems or distribution. It remains uncertain who will capture the best economics.

There are opportunities, but also numerous risks 

The opportunity is that smart glasses become a meaningful consumer-electronics category, sitting somewhere between smartphones, earbuds and watches. If they become a regular part of daily life, they could create new revenue streams and deepen customer relationships for companies across the ecosystem.

Distribution and design are likely to play a large role. Eyewear companies have a potential advantage as a product worn on the face needs to be tried on and fitted. Prescription lenses and premium coatings could also improve the economics compared with a hardware-only sale. At the same time, technology platforms may control the software, AI assistant and user relationship, which could limit the share of profits captured by eyewear manufacturers.

The risks are considerable. Emerging technologies can take longer than expected to reach mass adoption. Consumers may decide that phones and earbuds already do enough. Privacy may become the most visible hurdle. Cameras and microphones in normal-looking glasses raise concerns for bystanders who may not know whether they are being recorded. Regulation may evolve as the category grows, especially if facial recognition, biometric data or health-related information become involved.

Competition will also intensify. Large technology companies have deep pockets and strong software ecosystems, while lower-cost Asian competitors could put pressure on pricing. Some products may remain niche, serving enterprise, fitness or specialist use cases rather than becoming mass-market consumer devices.

Conclusion

AI glasses are still at an early stage, but the category has moved from concept to credible consumer product. The likely near-term outcome is not the end of the smartphone. It is a new companion interface for moments when hands-free, eyes-up computing is useful.

We can start to envisage a world where you visit your local opticians to have a pair of smart glasses made up, or discreetly improve your hearing through a pair of everyday frames. Eyewear may be moving from a product that corrects vision to one that also supports communication, information, translation, hearing and health.

The theme is worth watching as part of the broader convergence between AI, consumer electronics, eyewear, healthcare and software. The winners are likely to be those that combine useful technology with products people are willing to wear, trust and afford.
