Mid-week update - 29 April 2020

Weekly market update from Paul Abberley - CEO of Charles Stanley, along with some ideas to keep you busy in lockdown.

Reading a book

Paul Abberley

We’re now in our sixth week of lockdown and the Prime Minister has returned to work.  There’s been a lot of change for us all to deal with, whether it’s new ways of working together or new routines at home.

I know that many of you are receiving lots of messages concerning the Covid-19 crisis, some of which can seem repetitive.  However, I think it is important we communicate as openly as possible during these exceptional times.

Help prevent scams and cybercrime

A small number of fraudsters continue to try to take advantage of the current situation to trick people into giving them their money.

This week we have become aware of professional looking scam comparison websites for those looking at ways to invest.  Charles Stanley is not one of the companies featured, but please do not use any website that you have not previously used or heard of.

A new reporting service has been set up by The National Cyber Security Centre and the City of London Police.  You can play your part in preventing these crimes by forwarding any suspicious emails to [email protected] and they will then use this information to help remove criminal sites and operations.

Charles Stanley Community

While times are tough for many people, we hear stories of good things happening all over the country to raise our spirits.  Here at Charles Stanley, I am very proud of our staff members who raised £3,000 in just over a week for The Trussel Trust, which runs a local food bank.  Due to the current pandemic, increasing numbers of families are turning to food banks to make ends meet and we are delighted to lend our support.

I am also very pleased to announce that we have partnered with The Spectator’s Book Club podcast to share one of my favourite pastimes, the joy of discussing a good (or bad) book.  Should you have more time on your hands, there’s more new content in our Charles Stanley Community which may be of interest, including:

Charles Stanley Radio

For the latest update on the markets, you can listen to an interview with our Chief Information Officer, Jon Cunliffe and our Chief Global Strategist, John Redwood.  Later this week you can hear the views of Glenn Baker, Business Development Director on the psychological impact of the lockdown, both of which can be heard on Charles Stanley Radio, through our website or Spotify.

‘Housebound’ videos

In addition, you can watch a new ‘Housebound’ Facetime video on our social media channels where one of our investment managers will provide market analysis.

If there are any topics you would like us to cover then please let us know.
